The major subgroups of the Gnathostomata (jawed vertebrates) are the Sarcopterygii (lobe-finned fishes, this includes the tetrapoda and thus all land-living vertebrates) and the Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes [most of "usual" fishes]). See entries in tree of life web and wikipedia.
A previous screen (Washietl 2005, see link below) with human as the reference genome found about 36000 ncRNA candidates in mammals, including about 1000 that are shared between mammals and fish. It is thus of interest to see whether a large ncRNA repertoire is a special characteristic of the mammals, or whether Actinopterygii as the other large vertebrate subgroup have a similar number of (fish-specific) ncRNAs.
